An Unofficial ASEAN Champions League

With the Vietnam, Malaysia, Thai and Singapore leagues roughly in sync with each other and due to start their new seasons in the early weeks of 2010 clubs are now preparing training schedules, squads and friendlies.

Why not get the champions from each country to get together in a friendly tournament in December?

Bring together Muang Thong United, Da Nang, SAFFC and Selangor and let them battle it out. No Indonesians 'cos their season is cock eyed with everyone elses!

Get the ASEAN Football Federation to organise it, what do they do apart from run the AFF Cup every two years anyway, and find some sponsors. Like budget airlines, hotels, that sort of crap, vouchers for fast food restaurants.

Give, yep, give the TV rights away to generate interest for the first few years, get some marketing and away you go. Easy innit?!!!

Comments:
we (asean)use to have that kind of competition which held in a host country organized by aff the first edition held in indonesia if i am not mistaken clubs came from every asean countries and it was untill 2005 why it didn't last i have no idea..

i think sponsorship is main problem.

i heard a vietnamese club was planning to organize a tournament involving champion teams from southeast asia nations some months ago. it would be similar to world club championship. it means the tournament would be hosted annually in vietnam and vietnam would have 2 teams. but not much info about that plan since then.

yeah i know there used to be one but i understand that officially certain bodies aren t in favour...hence my suggesttion of an unofficial one..

I emailed AFF about 12 months back now regarding this. They did state that they wanted to bring back the regional championship, but not all AFF member nations were interested.

I think they are on the stance of all or nothing. They don't want a tournament featuring all but one or two.

Hi guys...

This will be a tricky one as such tournament would need to be officially sanction or it'll run foul with the official bodies or any sort (correct me if I'm not).

On the other hand, I guess some member countries would not want to have extra tournament as such to pile up in their already congested fixture.

The joke is that Tampines Rovers remain the Asean Club champions when they won the tournament donkey years back, but now who are they to compete if the AFF want to have it back next year?
